Short information in EnglishThis site is about the Montelius family from Uppland in Sweden. This Montelius family is not the only one of that name in Sweden, but it s members are numerous and widely spread. It originates from the reverend Johan Montelius, 1683-1768. Foreign visitors curious to know more about us are welcome to put questions to Bo Montelius, mont_sigurd@hotmail.com, and we shall try to append this English text accordingly. Of a certain interest to American visitors in particular might be the fact that the very wide spread American family Montelius could possibly be related to us. There is no proof of it, but certain clues make a wild guess plausible. That family originates from a Frederic Marcus Montelius who came to America in the late 18th century. Apart from them no other family of that name outside Sweden is known to us, unless they are just branches of Swedish families. The idea to take Latin family names was very typical for scholars in our country in the period when that language had the international position now held by the English tongue. It marked their bearers as intellectuals. Not only Johan, but also his son Augustin were for a long time vicars of Edebo parish north of Stockholm. His father in law, too, had held that job before him. August the 25th this year we plan to hold a family reunion, starting in Edebo. We are also going to visit a house in Stockholm where the world famous archaeologist Oscar Montelius lived his whole life. You can read about him in any encyclopaedia. |
